About five years ago I saw a bird like this at my bird feeder, having no idea what it was. Later I described it to my dad who immediately said, "That's a Pileated Woodpecker! It's Woody Woodpecker!" He was so excited that I had seen this large stunning creature . . . and so was I!
He and my mom LOVED nature! As you can probably tell, that rubbed off on me and now I am rubbing off on my dear little grandchildren, who became so upset when they saw builders cutting an entire stand of tall stately trees down. They moaned and cried, "Those were such nice trees!" And they were. And they were also homes to many creatures.
So yesterday while they ate their lunch, I looked out my kitchen window to see a Pileated Woodpecker! I was so excited and hoped the children weren't paying attention when I climbed up on the counter to try to shoot through the window . . . and then I saw the second one!!!
