This is a stylized version of two Pileated Woodpeckers with just a touch of red on their heads which is their signature marking.

About five years ago I saw a bird like this at my bird feeder, having no idea what it was. Later I described it to my dad who immediately said, "That's a Pileated Woodpecker! It's Woody Woodpecker!" He was so excited that I had seen this large stunning creature . . . and so was I!

He and my mom LOVED nature! As you can probably tell, that rubbed off on me and now I am rubbing off on my dear little grandchildren, who became so upset when they saw builders cutting an entire stand of tall stately trees down. They moaned and cried, "Those were such nice trees!" And they were. And they were also homes to many creatures.

So yesterday while they ate their lunch, I looked out my kitchen window to see a Pileated Woodpecker! I was so excited and hoped the children weren't paying attention when I climbed up on the counter to try to shoot through the window . . . and then I saw the second one!!! They were very difficult to capture together in one shot and they were really pecking at that poor tree for all they were worth! I was happy to get them both finally. Soon they flew off and I have not seen them since.

I really wished my parents were still alive so I could call and hear their excitement about my wonderful sighting! Instead I texted an image to my children. My oldest daughter responded with a very nice comment. When I opened my phone to read her text, the time on the screen was 1:11, which is how my dad reaches out to me from heaven. . . so mom and dad know!

I am so concerned with our environment that I have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
