Description
11/11/18 is when this was taken in the beautiful Hocking Hills of southern Ohio. To the eleven of us visiting the caves that day, it seemed way to early in the season to have such a chill in the air. The water was still tumbling from the Ash Cave cliffs towering above us, but as it splashed onto the rocks below it formed a wonderful wintry crystal show. Ice sculptures created by Nature's hand were sitting quietly and unassumingly. There is a lot to look at and for kids to play with and climb on, but my attention was drawn to these solid masses that sit there, day after day, year after year. I recognize them from past visits, usually just an ordinary extra in a scene of beauty. . . . but today, for me, they were the show stopper. They were the main attraction. Today was their day to sparkle.

The Hocking Hills are located in the picturesque sandstone region of Southeastern Ohio. The State Park contains some of the most scenic areas in the entire state. It is beautiful throughout the year, but especially popular in the fall with the changing leaf colors. Hikers can enjoy the peaceful nature of rock outcrops, deep cool gorges, and waterfalls.
Ash Cave is one of our family favorites in the Hocking Hills. It is a very easy walk through beautiful hills and trees with sandstone cliffs lining the way. When we reach the cave, it is just as wonderful and magical as the first time we came so many years ago. There is a comfortable reassurance that time seems to stand still here. There is a gentle waterfall coming from high above us, splashing into a small pond, where skipping stones is always a temptation that just can't be ignored. There is such a quiet calm here that cannot be described in words. I only hope my image conveys some of that wonder and tranquility!
