Eleven of us made our family traditional trip to the Hocking Hills. The cold and unusual weather had seen the leaves on the Ohio trees change color quite late in the season and just as soon as they changed were blown away by high winds. So our walk through this magical place had a different feel today. More sunshine was able to break through the bare branches overhead, but it was a frozen light that illuminated our breathe without giving any warmth. The children delighted in seeing their breathe clouds and of course, nothing diminished the fun of romping through the caves and paths and making rustling noise with all the dried leaves at our feet.
This small cliff seemed to be guarding the path that we were attempting to hike. The Hill monster did not make a sound, but it was not something to be ignored. The cold sun's rays made the monster's teeth sparkle with menace and without any real reason we all hurried past this ominous open jaw of the hillside, just in case!
It's funny how the Hocking Hills takes me back in time. Back to a time when my imagination ran freely. When my brother, sister and I would all gallop along the paths on the backs of noble horses and find adventure and mystery in the shadows and ravines. Where we didn't know who might be living under those bridges we crossed or in the hollows of the trees or hidden in those magical caves.
A few days later, my grandchildren were at my house playing and they kept talking about the Rock Monster. I guess their imaginations are in fine shape, which I am so happy to observe!

The Hocking Hills are located in the picturesque sandstone region of Southeastern Ohio. The State Park contains some of the most scenic areas in the entire state. It is beautiful throughout the year, but especially popular in the fall with the changing leaf colors. Hikers can enjoy the peaceful nature of rock outcrops, deep cool gorges, and waterfalls.
Ash Cave is one of our family favorites in the Hocking Hills. It is a very easy walk through beautiful hills and trees with sandstone cliffs lining the way. When we reach the cave, it is just as wonderful and magical as the first time we came so many years ago. There is a comfortable reassurance that time seems to stand still here. There is a gentle waterfall coming from high above us, splashing into a small pond, where skipping stones is always a temptation that just can't be ignored. There is such a quiet calm here that cannot be described in words. I only hope my image conveys some of that wonder and tranquility!

An amazing image, Karen. Wonderful capture of the icicles and their shadows, and the contrast between the darkness and the lovely light is perfect. f/l
