Description
Early summer is a mix of spring days and summer haze...you never quite know what kind of day you will get in Ohio. This Sunday was overcast and seemed to threaten rain all day, but that was all it was just idle threats. This actually made for a perfect day to visit the Park of Roses at Whetstone Park in Columbus, Ohio, Early June finds many roses in full bloom and many other plants are blooming in the early summer weather. A Kousa Dogwood tree was alive with tiny Summer Azure butterflies fluttering in and amongst the beautiful star-shaped blooms.
I have darkened the background to give full attention to the lovely grace of the bloom and the details of this beautiful tiny butterfly.
The Summer Azure is usually larger than the spring azure with brilliant blue dorsal wing surfaces. This species is fond of mud puddles and animal scat. Huge 'puddle clubs' can be found on muddy roads, trails and stream banks. The larvae feed on dogwoods, wild cherry, and wingstem.
This image is also available cropped to fit an 8x10" mat of your choice. Check out my Series Gallery to find that!
