Description
Another happy trip out to the mailbox today and I can't help but wonder if this might be the butterfly that I met as a caterpillar a few weeks ago! I sure hope it is. This is called the dorsal view. In butterflies, the dorsal surface is visible when the wings are held open. In humans, this is equivalent to the “back” side of our bodies. The underside, called the ventral, is visible when the butterflies sit with their wings folded upright. The great part about this dorsal view is that it is very easy to tell this is a male Monarch. Males have a small black spot on the top surface of the hindwing. Females do not. You can see the spot when the wings are open; sometimes it's faintly visible when the wings are closed, too.
Another detail that can help identify one from the other, is that males also have slightly thinner wing veins. The females black lines tend to be a tiny bit thicker and her coloring seems a bit darker than the male.
Of course, Monarchs LOVE Milkweed. It is the plant they need to survive. If you ever walk by a tall Milkweed plant in bloom, you will see tons of happy bees, maybe some butterflies, and if you take a deep breath in, you will smell such a sweet delightful fragrance!
So, I sometimes check for mail three to four times a day!

Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
