Description
This Palm plant sat on the window sill of my dad's Rehab room and for some unknown reason, my dad did not like this plant and so I brought it home. Years later, I am still trying to keep this living link to my dad alive. He had a stroke that affected his ability to speak. The frustration that this created for him can still tear at my heart. He was such an active, friendly intelligent man before that awful morning.
I made a book for dad and me to use to help him remember names and places. There were pictures of family and his friends. He was an artist so he could draw pictures of things and we would work on trying to get those words back into his head. For the longest time, he could not remember my name. He knew who I was, but the name was a muddle. It seemed we were traveling together in the dark. It was so hard. When he would come up with a memory or with a name or a word, it was a joyful moment. it seemed that the light was turning back on.
The people at the Rehab Center were so sweet to him. I remember especially a man, (originally from Jamaica) who was a night worker there, who seemed to have a connection with Dad. One night, (probably against what he should have been doing,) he spent an hour or so watching a baseball game with dad. It was the first time, my dad felt 'normal' in a long time! His spirit was so uplifted the next day I came to visit!
Dad improved, but he never did get back to his normal life. I remember that time as a dark sad time, but it also was such a precious time. I spent more one on one time alone with dad in those couple of months than ever before . . . and so in those dark days there was light . . . there was a joy . . . there was treasure! This palm is a reminder of days with dad!

Thanks, Greg . . . it's a bittersweet feeling for me with this plant, but I feel like Dad is with me and this is one more piece of that comfort!
