Description
Well, this may be a common little damselfly fluttering around, but it sure is pretty when you look up close at that glistening sapphire blue body! The ebony jewelwing (Calopteryx maculata) is a species of broad-winged damselfly. It is one of about 170 species of Odonata found in New England, the Mid-Atlantic states, and southeastern Canada. Other common names include black-winged damselfly.
This is actually the male since he is a bit more colorful than the female. You know it is a Damselfly because when it is at rest its wings are closed discreetly over its body. Dragonflies keep their wings spread out from the body.
