Description
My mom's mother loved to paint. She was a very proper woman, born in 1900, but she also had a fun side to her! She raised four children while her husband was gone much of the time working as a traveling salesman. Her husband (my grandpa) served in World War I. Her three sons each served in war. The oldest in WWII, the middle one in the Korean War and her youngest son in the Vietnam War. She was a strong woman!
Some of my greatest memories of her though are of doing craft projects with her . . . . you name it we did it! Knitting, embroidery, antiquing flowers, wrapping plastic fruit with lace and painting that, staining glass for votive candles. . . . we never just sat around when Grandma came to visit. . . . so my artistic center was bound to develop with her influence and my dad's!
Grandma painted this in 1957. I am not sure if this is a particular place, but now that I am looking at it today, something has struck me. This looks a lot like the scene by the cemetery in Plain City, Ohio, where my mother and father now lay with mom's side of the family. When I stand at their graves I see a farm to my right and across the street is a farm house and its barn close to the country road (which is now a paved one.) I always hear a cow mooing, a dog barking, and no matter what time of day, a rooster is crowing. I now have those sounds echoing in my head when I look at this scene. It is beautiful and peaceful . . . . a perfect place.
