Description
Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca)
Common milkweed (A. syriaca) is aptly named as it is the most widely found milkweed in North America. It grows a strong, three foot stem and pink flower. I love this plant because Monarch butterflies love it and they need them to live. The hungry Monarch caterpillar eats the leaves of this plant which has the wonderful effect of making them poisonous to predators who want to eat them. One of the biggest factors in monarch decline is the increasing scarcity of its only caterpillar host plant: milkweed. Without milkweed, monarchs can’t successfully reproduce and the species declines. By planting milkweed in your own garden, landscape and throughout your community, you can help reverse the fortune of these beautiful insects.
