Description
I remember the terror that flew through our house one night when our adorable, but mischievous Spitz dog ate a leaf of my Dieffenbachia. We knew that this was not a good plant to be eaten. We knew of its effect on the throat. The common name, "dumb canes" refers to the poisoning effect of raphides, which can cause temporary inability to speak and our fear was for our beloved pet to be able to swallow. A frantic call to Poison Control well after midnight was answered by another concerned animal lover. We were instructed to pour salt in Heidi's mouth until we could get her to throw up what she had eaten. Well, she really did not want to cooperate, but mom and dad persisted and in my mind saved her life.
I love the look of these beautiful plants, but have always been a bit leery of growing them since I have had children, pets and now grandchildren.
Now I enjoy looking at the paintings I did during college when I actually did surround myself with these wonderful houseplants. In addition to being known as 'dumb cane,' these also have a somewhat comical name of 'the mother-in-law's tongue.'
I did a series of paintings of plants that look nice in a grouping. You can find others in my Series Gallery.
