Description
I was lucky that this lovely Giant Swallowtail posed with a very clean minimal background, so all of our attention can be focused on its beauty. Giant Swallowtails, as its name implies, are fairly large for butterflies and lucky for me are somewhat common. . . . which means I see at least three or four in a summer here in Ohio.
This one is really lovely and in really good shape: both of its tails are still intact (from which the family of butterflies get their name.) These are actually designed to break off so they can escape the clasp of a predator. The ventral view (shown here) is mostly yellow with black patterns and blue and orange spots. The other side of their wings (dorsal view) is almost completely black with yellow lines which I think look like a big smile. There are small orange spots on the dorsal hindwing as well.
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
