Description
I chased this wonderful Malakite butterfly around the Franklin Park Conservatory, (Columbus, Ohio,) for quite some time before I finally got a couple of 'decent' shots. Unfortunately, he has some damage to his wings, but that did not seem to hurt his flying ability. He really loved the yellow Lantana flowers, which also made things tough for me since they were 'high hangers' in the gardens! It is such a lovely butterfly though; well worth the effort.
Malakites are found in Brazil north through Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies to southern Florida and South Texas. A rare stray into Kansas. The southern Florida populations has become established since the 1960s and presumed to have emigrated from Cuba.
Malakite, (Siproeta stelenes) is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly. The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the upperside and light brown and olive green on the underside. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly's wings.
