Description
Heliconius Butterflies are a large widespread genus of brushfooted butterflies commonly known as the longwings or heliconians. This genus is distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of the New World, from South America as far north as the southern United States. The larvae of these butterflies eat passion flower vines (Passifloraceae)
A wide variety of wing patterns is found in the Heliconius or passion-vine butterflies. The huge diversity of wing patterns is an adaptation for survival. They have undergone rapid speciation and divergence, and also show an amazing amount of convergence in wing pattern due to mimcry. They copy other butterflies who are poisonous or taste bad to predators and thereby fake out those creatures who otherwise would eat them! Beauty and brains! What a great combination!
I really appreciate you taking time to look at my artwork. Thank you so much!
