Description
People may think this is a Monarch, but it is actually a Viceroy. The black curved line that makes its way round the bottom of the hindwings shows this to be a Viceroy. It looks a lot like a Monarch because that is its protection from predators. The Monarch (which eats Milkweed) actually tastes very bad to aviary predators because of its diet of Milkweed....so by looking a lot like a Monarch a bird will probably not try eating a Viceroy if it has already had a bad experience with the taste of a Monarch. This square format shows the translucent quality of the hindwings of a Viceroy butterfly against a tan background. You can actually make out the silhouettes of tall purple verbena flowers through the wings.
