Description
Although there are certain butterflies with the first word of common in their name, I always feel that does a disservice to their beauty. The Common Buckeye butterfly is a truly beautiful one. This little guy is 'common,' and quite plentiful in my Ohio backyard, but if you take the time and care to notice this tiny visitor to your garden, you will see a very lovely creature, indeed!
It is a very small skipper marked by a blue or black body, and white and brown bands on the wings. The Common Checkered is not easy to identify because it closely resembles other skippers. I believe this is a male Checkered.
Do you notice that there is another creature in this shot? I did not even see the grasshopper until I looked at my images on my big computer screen! They didn't seem to mind each other at all.
Pyrgus communis, the common checkered-skipper, is a species of butterfly in the family Hesperiidae. It is known as the frequently seen Pyrginae species in the northern United States by collectors and watchers alike.
Scientific name: Pyrgus communis
Phylum: Euarthropoda
Higher classification: Grizzled skippers
Order: Lepidoptera
Rank: Species
Family: Hesperiidae
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!
