Description
I thought this was a bee, since it is sitting on a flower seeming to be getting nectar from it.
However, as I researched what type this could be, I decided this must be a wasp after reading that wasps' bodies are long and thin with two pairs of wings and are often brightly colored. Their bodies are smooth compared to the 'hairy' bodies of bees.
Bees are pollinators and so you see them on and around flowers mostly. Wasps are usually predators who eat other insects such as caterpillars and flies. Although sometimes, wasps sip on nectar too and can be attracted to human food, especially sugary beverages and beer!
The term wasp is typically defined as any insect of the order Hymenoptera and suborder Apocrita that is neither a bee nor ant . Almost every pest insect species has at least one wasp species that preys upon it.
Wasps are more aggressive compared to bees and can can sting multiple targets.
Wasps vary greatly among the more than 100,000 species. Some are wingless, some dig in the ground, but nearly all prey on pest insects.
This image was taken in Columbus, Ohio on a hot afternoon in June. So hot, even the bees and the wasps were too lazy to move! So now I know a little bit of the differences between bees and wasps! No matter what this little guy is, he sure is pretty!
Thank you so much for looking at my images. I appreciate that very much.
I am very concerned with our environment and have decided to donate any money I make from any sales of this image to the ENVIRONMENTAL DEFENSE FUND.....because the Earth needs a good lawyer! We all need to speak up and support efforts to protect our environment. We will not get a second chance!

Lovely selective focus with the insect perfectly focused, the flower a bit softer, and the background very soft to set the two off. This was one of my two pod's in the Best of Minimalism group for July 21.

Marvelous detail, Karen, especially when set against the softness of the environment and the single flower. This is a pod choice for me today in the Best of Minimalism group.
